Why clean before you unpack
Even a home that looks clean can have dust in the cupboards, grease in the oven and marks behind where the last owner's furniture stood. Once your boxes and furniture are in, those areas are hard to reach. A clean before the move means every interior can be done properly, once.
Before you start
- Plan the clean for after the keys arrive and before the movers do
- Check that the power and water are on
- If you are renting, take photos of the condition of each room when you move in and keep them with your inspection report
- Note anything that needs a repair rather than a clean, such as damaged seals or mould, and report it
Kitchen
- Cabinet and drawer interiors wiped out before anything goes in
- Fridge and freezer cleaned inside and out
- Oven cleaned inside, including racks and trays
- Cooktop degreased, rangehood exterior and accessible filters cleaned
- Benchtops, splashbacks, sink and taps, including limescale
- Microwave, dishwasher exterior, kickboards and the floor
Bathrooms and toilets
- Toilet cleaned and disinfected, including the seat hinges and base
- Shower, screen, bath and tiles, with limescale and accessible grout treated
- Vanity drawers and cabinets cleaned inside
- Mirrors, towel rails, exhaust fan covers and floors
Bedrooms and living areas
- Wardrobe interiors and shelves cleaned before clothes go in
- Skirting boards, door frames, handles and light switches
- Window sills, accessible frames and tracks
- Cobwebs removed from ceilings and corners
Floors and finishing
- Carpets vacuumed thoroughly, including edges and corners
- Hard floors mopped with the right method for timber, laminate, vinyl or tile
- Carpets steam cleaned if they look dull or were left marked
- A final walk-through to check every room
