How Often Should an Office Be Cleaned?

High-traffic offices usually need daily cleaning of bathrooms, kitchens and floors, while smaller offices often manage with two or three visits a week. The right schedule depends on how your space is used.

What decides how often you need cleaning

  • How many people use the space: more people means more rubbish, more bathroom use and more dirt on the floors.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms: shared kitchens and bathrooms need attention most often.
  • Visitors: reception areas and meeting rooms that clients see need to look right every day.
  • Hot-desking: shared desks and touch points need more frequent wiping.
  • Floor types: hard floors, carpet, marble and glass each have their own care cycle.

Tasks to do daily

In a busy office these are usually done every working day:

  • Bathrooms cleaned and sanitised
  • Kitchen benchtops, sinks and appliance exteriors wiped
  • Bins emptied
  • High-touch surfaces such as handles, switches and taps cleaned
  • Reception and entrance floors cleaned

Tasks to do weekly

  • All floors vacuumed or mopped throughout
  • Desks and accessible surfaces dusted
  • Meeting rooms reset
  • Internal glass and partitions spot-cleaned

Periodic and specialist work

Some work only needs doing every few weeks or months: glass and façade polishing, marble and porcelain floor polishing, carpet deep cleaning and light fittings. Scheduling these separately keeps the daily cost down while protecting the finish of your floors and glass.

Example schedules

These are examples only. The right schedule for your premises is confirmed at an inspection.

Office typeCommon scheduleFocus areas
Small office or studioTwo to three visits a weekKitchen, bathroom, floors and bins
Busy or hot-desking officeDailyBathrooms, kitchens, desks, meeting rooms and high-touch surfaces
Corporate floors and receptionDaily, plus periodic specialist workFoyers, glass, marble or porcelain floor polishing

Signs your schedule is not enough

  • Bathrooms look or smell tired by the afternoon
  • Bins are full before the next visit
  • Dust builds up on desks and ledges between cleans
  • Staff are cleaning the kitchen themselves
  • Floors look dull in the entrance and main walkways

If you notice these, it is usually cheaper to add a short visit for the busiest rooms than to move the whole office to a daily clean.

How frequency affects cost

More visits cost more per week, but each visit is lighter. Our guide to commercial cleaning costs in Auckland explains the other factors in a quote and what it should include.
